Which tour is right for me? You may have noticed that I have two Iceland tours listed on my website. What’s the difference? The Aug/Sept tour features extra daylight hours to see more at a relaxed schedule and the weather will be a little warmer (high: 54° low 45°) to see more lush green landscapes. But the biggest difference between tours is that the summer tour adds an extra day/night to explore Reykjavik …and features my assistant guide Megan 🙂
The November tour offers magical winter scenery with some snow-covered mountains and icy landscapes and a few more “cold weather” activities for adventure-seekers like exploring ice caves as temperatures drop about ten degrees (high: 43° low 35°). The sun sets 4 hours earlier which gives us more opportunity to hunt for Northern Lights. There are less tourists at most sites in November which is a bonus for photographers. Both tours have the same chance of rain, clouds and aurora activity. Itineraries vary slightly: See the Aug/Sept tour itinerary below and check out the November tour here.

Itinerary

Aug 29Depart U.S. for Iceland

Most international flights leave at night to arrive in Iceland the following morning. I’ll help you choose the right flight for you.

Aug 30Arrive in Reykjavik

We start our tour in Iceland’s vibrant capital, known for its colorful buildings, rich cultural & food scene, and the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church. I’ll give you a guide to the city for a few hours of exploring before our official Welcome Dinner.

Aug 31Geysers, Hot Springs and a Volcano

After breakfast, we board our Mercedes Sprinter for Iceland’s “Golden Circle.” Our first stop is Thingvellir National Park where you can stand between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates where they meet – one foot on each continent! Then we will visit an active geothermal hot springs area where you’ll see Strokkur Geyser erupt, shooting boiling water up to 65 feet into the air. After lunch, you’ll see Gulfoss – one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, over several multi-step tiers and cliffs into the canyon below. Finally, a chance to walk into the crater of the (inactive) Kerið volcano formed about 6,500 years ago. It’s red volcanic rock and crystal blue lake water creates a visually stunning geological wonder. We will settle for the night in Selfoss – a pedestrian-friendly college town with a trendy food hall.

Sept 1Magnificent Waterfalls & Canyon

See Seljalandsfoss: a path allows us to walk behind the tall, cascading waterfall. And Skógafoss: one of Iceland’s largest and most powerful waterfalls, known for its impressive spray and vibrant rainbows. Then we will spend time in Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon… don’t worry about how to pronounce it – even the Icelandic people struggle with the name! This impressive, moss-covered canyon has steep walls and a winding river; it was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, about ten thousand years ago. The canyon was virtually a secret to visitors until Justin Bieber recorded a video for “I’ll Show You” here (Google it!) 9 years ago. More recently, this location was the backdrop for Game of Thrones. The views are insane!

Sept 2Massive Glaciers & Icebergs

Vatnajökull – Europe’s largest national park offers vast ice capped mountains, volcanic landscapes and the largest glacier in Europe. First, we’ll visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you will see huge icebergs floating out to the Atlantic Ocean and maybe some wildlife including seals and dolphins. We will also walk on Diamond Beach, where giant sparkling chunks of ice wash ashore and glisten like diamonds against the black sand. There will also be an optional add-on experience here: your chance to ride in an amphibian boat or zodiac raft right up to the floating icebergs and glacial wall. Have you ever tasted 2,000 year old ice? At night, we are in some of the darkest skies in Europe, so we will be on the lookout for Northern Lights. When the conditions are right, the colorful Aurora will dance right over our heads!

Sept 3South Iceland's Coastline

We visit Skaftafell and “hike” (a 45 minute walk) to Svartifoss. It’s a striking waterfall renowned for its unique backdrop of dark hexagonal basalt columns that resemble a black organ pipe. The hike also offers impressive views of the Skaftafellsjökull glacier and Iceland’s tallest mountains next door. Tonight, we settle in Vik – a picturesque coastal village nestled beneath dramatic cliffs, known for stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and a good craft brewery. It’s Iceland’s southernmost town and another good place to spot Northern Lights. There may also be an optional add-on experience available here to go horseback riding on the black sand beach (depending on weather).

Sept 4Black Sand Beaches, Cliffs and Lava Tunnels

Reynisfjara is a dramatic black sand beach with rock towers and huge, powerful waves. We will visit in the morning before the crowds and day-trippers arrive at this popular sight. Then, Dyrhólaey Cape to see its stunning panoramic views of the rugged coastline, black sand beaches, and striking rock formations including the famous arch-shaped cliff. You’ll walk away with some stunning photos of this area. Iceland is home to more than 60% of the world’s entire Atlantic puffin population. These cute seabirds spend most of their time out at sea. They can dive underwater for up to one minute and come up to the surface with ten fish in their colorful beak! Puffins form breeding colonies all summer over this section of ocean so maybe we’ll see some at the tail end of their migratory season here. At the top of the cape, we’ll also see the famous Dyrhólaey lighthouse and a panoramic view for miles in all directions.

Sept 5Reykjavik

On the west coast of Iceland, Reykjavik is the country’s capital and largest city. Today is our chance to relax, explore some landmarks and enjoy Iceland’s incredibly pure foods. Trace Iceland’s Viking history, experience the cafe culture by the bustling harbor and of course, do some souvenir shopping. If you like bars & clubs, they stay open until 5am in social Reykjavik! Optional add-on experiences today include whale watching or a visit to the geothermal Sky Lagoon spa or the infamous Blue Lagoon!

Photos

Here’s a few photos from my earliest visits (I still have to upload newer ones). Viewing this on your phone? Tap the photo below to launch slideshow of some photos I took of Iceland’s natural wonders.

DOCUMENTS NOTE: You must have a passport that is valid for six months beyond your visit to Iceland (or a travel visa if your citizenship is not U.S. or Canadian). Refunds will not be given because you did not secure a valid passport, visa or green card in time for this trip.

LIMITATIONS NOTE: For this trip. we require you to be reasonably fit in order to keep up with our group outdoors in all types of weather. Visits to a few sites require up to 2 mile out-and-back (90 minute) walk. Visits to glaciers & waterfalls can be slippery and uneven. We also require that you are able to handle your own luggage/bags, and enter/exit the vehicle without assistance as we move to a different hotel each night along the southern coast of Iceland. We regret that this tour is not designed to accommodate guests with wheelchairs or mobility limitations due to conditions beyond our control – some of the natural outdoor sites we are visiting are not fully accessible. Please contact us if you have any health concerns that may make a trip challenging and we can answer all questions. Iceland’s restaurants are accommodating to those with food allergies.  When you send your tour deposit, you certify to us that you do not knowingly have any physical or other conditions that would create a risk for yourself or for others on the trip or alter the group’s travel plans.

WEATHER NOTICE: Iceland isn’t exactly known for its sunny weather, but what it can be known for is the amazing light, stormy seas and moody clouds. Iceland is not freezing as some people think, but we are visiting at a time when we will likely see rainfall and possibly even snow.  We will adjust the tour locations each day as necessary for comfort but we continue in all weather. I’ll provide a packing list to help you ward off the rain and wind. And while Aurora activity is expected to be high during our planned visit, we can’t control the clouds – we can only hope they part at night to give us a show!

PAYMENT AND CANCELATION: We accept all major credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App and personal checks. Payment is made in the following installments:

  • $500 non-refundable deposit to register and hold your spot.
  • $1,500 due by 1/1/25
  • $1,000 due by 2/15/25
  • Balance due by 4/15/25

Do not book our tours unless you are sure you can go.
Emergencies happen – consider trip insurance to protect yourself:

The hotel room blocks, transportation, tour directors and other expenses we have arranged in advance of this massive international tour are a great expense and non-refundable. Last-minute cancellation by you can make it difficult for us to find another replacement.  There is a cost and risk for us to arrange group travel. Therefore, the payment plan above has been set up and all payments are non-refundable unless we can find another traveler to take your spot. We understand life changes and emergencies happen so we will make every attempt to replace you on the tour if you have to cancel. (We sometimes have a waiting list.) If we find a replacement, all of your money will be refunded, minus your deposit. But if we reach the tour and we can not find someone to go in your place (aka we have an empty seat instead of a sell-out) your deposits and payments are non-refundable. An empty seat comes at a great cost to us. Therefore, please only sign up if you know you can travel with us.
