Iceland with Spike! (Sept. 2027)

Fly to Iceland! It’s a simple nonstop 5.5 hr flight on Delta and airfare is trending downward which is good news.

Welcome to Iceland! After airport pickup in our luxury Mercedes Sprinter, we’ll enjoy a relaxed drive out to the stunning south coast with a couple of scenic stops. We’ll explore Raufarhólshellir, a massive lava tunnel formed over 5,000 years ago, where dramatic skylights reveal colorful rock formations. Next, we’ll visit the striking Kerid volcanic crater, famous for its vivid slopes and aquamarine lake—walk the rim or down to the water for unique views. We’ll stop in Selfoss for lunch at The Old Dairy Food Hall, featuring a variety of cuisines, and finish the evening with a festive Welcome Dinner to celebrate our arrival.

Seljalandsfoss is a spectacular 200-foot waterfall, uniquely featuring a path that lets visitors walk behind the cascading water for incredible photos. Nearby, Gljúfrabúi is a hidden waterfall in a mossy canyon, accessed by stepping through a narrow stream for an intimate, magical view. Eyjafjallajökull, the glacier-volcano that famously disrupted air travel in 2010, has been active recently but its eruptions are occurring far from this area. Skógafoss impresses with its thundering 200-foot drop and offers close-up misty views, plus panoramic vistas. Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, carved by glacial meltwater, stretches for over a mile with dramatic moss-covered cliffs, while Kirkjubæjarklaustur is a historic village known for its ancient monastery and striking scenery.

Today, we’ll see the Eldhraun Lava Fields were shaped by a massive eruption. Svínafellsjökull is a dramatic, six-mile-long glacier flowing from Vatnajökull, with deep crevasses and scenery often used in films. It’s the largest glacier in Europe. Skaftafell sits within Vatnajökull National Park, featuring striking natural beauty and a blend of rich geology and local culture. Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland’s highest peak at 6,923 feet. Diamond Beach, with its black sand and scattered icebergs, is a year-round photography hotspot—sometimes humpback whales pass by offshore. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland’s deepest lake, is filled with floating icebergs and wildlife like dolphins and seals.

Vestrahorn is a dramatic mountain range in southeast Iceland with jagged peaks rising sharply from black sand beaches, a favorite among photographers for its stunning reflections. Nearby Stokksnes offers beautiful natural landscapes, where visitors might spot seals on the beach or wild horses roaming the dunes. We will also visit a Viking Village where you can board a Viking wooden longship.

Enter one of Iceland’s largest man-made caves, believed to have been inhabited as early as the 12th century. Then Reynisfjara is Iceland’s famous black sand beach with basalt cliffs and powerful Atlantic waves; this is where the puffins hang out in summer. Dyrhólaey Cape offers sweeping views of the southern coast, abundant birdlife, and a distinctive lighthouse perfect for photos. And we’ll settle in he village of Vík, Iceland’s southernmost point, known for its lively restaurants and the country’s first microbrewery.

Today, we head to the Golden Circle: Strokkur Geyser is one of Iceland’s most reliable geysers, shooting boiling water sometimes up to 130 feet high. It’s surrounded by steaming vents and mineral-rich terrain that highlight Iceland’s geothermal power. We’ll also visit a famous Icelandic greenhouse. Gullfoss, or “Golden Falls,” is a powerful waterfall that plunges in two stages into a canyon, often creating rainbows in its mist. And Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO site noted for the Almannagjá Rift where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates—a rare chance to stand between continents!

A full day to immerse yourself in this vibrant city. Highlights include the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church, The Harpa Concert Hall, the colorful streets of the Old Town, and a beautiful harbor full of boats. Visitors can enjoy cozy cafés, art galleries, and shopping on the lively Laugavegur street. Reykjavik blends modern culture with rich history, providing a memorable snapshot of Icelandic life. This is a day to eat, drink, shop and explore!

Bid farewell to Iceland. You’ll have one last chance to enjoy some coffee on a lazy morning and do some last souvenir shopping this morning as most flights depart for the U.S. in the afternoon. UNLESS… you decide to stay longer! I’ll make arrangements for anyone who wishes to have more time in Reykjavik. Some may choose to stay for a whale watching boat tour or a spa day at the famous Blue Lagoon. I’ll help you customize your visit!
