Itinerary
*subject to change day-to-day, plans still be finalized

Nov 5Depart U.S. for Iceland

Most international flights leave at night to arrive in Iceland the following morning. I’ll help you choose the right flight for you. Currently, the fastest and cheapest flight from Detroit is Icelandair 872

Nov 6Inside the volcano and lava tunnels

Our custom Mercedes Sprinter us will pick us up at the airport for an easy but fun first day in Iceland: Have you ever been in a lava tunnel? We will go underground. And then up top for a chance to walk into the crater of the (inactive) Kerið volcano formed about 6,500 years ago. It’s red volcanic rock and crystal blue lake water creates a visually stunning geological wonder. You’ll learn about how Iceland formed and how it’s still developing today. Finally, a path allows us to walk behind the tall, cascading Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. It’s beautiful as the sun is setting. We’ll retire early tonight to relax. (But the hotel bar will be open if you can’t sleep!)

Nov 7Waterfalls, a lighthouse, cliffs and a stunning canyon

Our first stop is Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s largest and most powerful waterfalls, known for its impressive spray and vibrant rainbows. Then on to Dyrhólaey Cape to see its stunning panoramic views of the rugged coastline, black sand beaches, and striking rock formations including the famous arch-shaped cliff. You’ll walk away with some stunning photos of this area. At the top of the cape, we’ll also see the famous Dyrhólaey lighthouse and a panoramic view for miles in all directions. Afterwards, we’ll stop for lunch in Vik, and then spend the afternoon in Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon… don’t worry about how to pronounce it – even the Icelandic people struggle with the name! This impressive, moss-covered canyon has steep walls and a winding river; it was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, about ten thousand years ago. The canyon was virtually a secret to visitors until Justin Bieber recorded a video for “I’ll Show You” here (Google it!) 9 years ago. More recently, this location was the backdrop for Game of Thrones. The views are insane!

Nov 8Massive Glaciers & Icebergs

Vatnajökull – Europe’s largest national park offers vast ice capped mountains, volcanic landscapes and the largest glacier in Europe. First, we’ll visit Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where you will see huge icebergs floating out to the Atlantic Ocean and maybe some wildlife including seals and dolphins. We will also walk on Diamond Beach, where giant sparkling chunks of ice wash ashore and glisten like diamonds against the black sand. There will also be an optional add-on experience here: your chance to ride in an amphibian boat to see the floating icebergs up close. At night, we are in some of the darkest skies in Europe, so we will be on the lookout for Northern Lights. When the conditions are right, the colorful Aurora will dance right over our heads! If they’re dancing, we may take a late night drive to a photogenic location.

Nov 9Vik & into the ice cave

Today, a SuperJeep glacier ice cave tour adventure! We visit the country’s bluest, most captivating ice cave. Get up close and personal to incredible shades of icy blue while you walk into the depths of the mighty Vatnajokull, Europe’s largest Glacier. Tonight, we settle in Vik – a picturesque coastal village nestled beneath dramatic cliffs, known for stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and a good craft brewery. It’s Iceland’s southernmost town and another good place to spot Northern Lights. There may also be an optional add-on experience available here to go horseback riding on the black sand beach (depending on weather and timing).

Nov 10South Iceland's Coastline

We visit Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, renowned for its dramatic black volcanic sands, powerful Atlantic waves, and striking basalt formations, including the iconic Reynisdrangar sea stacks and hexagonal columns, making it one of the world’s most visually stunning beaches. In the afternoon, we’ll head into Iceland’s famous “Golden Circle.”

Nov 11Geysers and Hot Springs

After breakfast, we visit an active geothermal hot springs area where you’ll see Strokkur Geyser erupt, shooting boiling water up to 65 feet into the air. After lunch, you’ll see Gulfoss – one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, over several multi-step tiers and cliffs into the canyon below. After lunch, a stop in Thingvellir National Park where you can stand between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates where they meet – one foot on each continent! Then we finally reach the Capital city of Reykjavik for our final night. Possible optional add-on experiences to visit the geothermal Sky Lagoon or Blue Lagoon Spa.
Reykjavik is known for its colorful buildings, rich cultural & food scene, and the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church. I’ll give you a guide to the city for exploring.

Photos

Here’s a few photos from my earliest visits (I still have to upload newer ones). Viewing this on your phone? Tap the photo below to launch slideshow of some photos I took of Iceland’s natural wonders.

DOCUMENTS NOTE: You must have a passport that is valid for six months beyond your visit to Iceland (or a travel visa if your citizenship is not U.S. or Canadian). Refunds will not be given because you did not secure a valid passport, visa or green card in time for this trip.

LIMITATIONS NOTE: For this trip. we require you to be reasonably fit in order to keep up with our group outdoors in all types of weather. Visits to a few sites require up to 2 mile out-and-back (90 minute) walk. Visits to glaciers & waterfalls can be slippery and uneven. We also require that you are able to handle your own luggage/bags, and enter/exit the vehicle without assistance as we move to a different hotel each night along the southern coast of Iceland. We regret that this tour is not designed to accommodate guests with wheelchairs or mobility limitations due to conditions beyond our control – some of the natural outdoor sites we are visiting are not fully accessible. Please contact us if you have any health concerns that may make a trip challenging and we can answer all questions. Iceland’s restaurants are accommodating to those with food allergies.  When you send your tour deposit, you certify to us that you do not knowingly have any physical or other conditions that would create a risk for yourself or for others on the trip or alter the group’s travel plans.

WEATHER NOTICE: Iceland isn’t exactly known for its sunny weather, but what it can be known for is the amazing light, stormy seas and moody clouds. Iceland is not freezing as some people think, but we are visiting at a time when we will likely see rainfall and possibly even snow.  We will adjust the tour locations each day as necessary for comfort but we continue in all weather. I’ll provide a packing list to help you ward off the rain and wind. And while Aurora activity is expected to be high during our planned visit, we can’t control the clouds – we can only hope they part at night to give us a show!

PAYMENT AND CANCELATION: We accept all major credit cards, Venmo, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Cash App and personal checks. Payment is made in the following installments:

Emergencies happen – consider trip insurance to protect yourself:

The hotel room blocks, transportation, tour directors and other expenses we have arranged in advance of this massive international tour are a great expense and non-refundable. Last-minute cancellation by you can make it difficult for us to find another replacement.  There is a cost and risk for us to arrange group travel. Therefore, the payment plan above has been set up and all payments are non-refundable unless we can find another traveler to take your spot. We understand life changes and emergencies happen so we will make every attempt to replace you on the tour if you have to cancel. (We sometimes have a waiting list.) If we find a replacement, all of your money will be refunded, minus your deposit. But if we reach the tour and we can not find someone to go in your place (aka we have an empty seat instead of a sell-out) your deposits and payments are non-refundable. An empty seat comes at a great cost to us. Therefore, please only sign up if you know you can travel with us.
